70th Anniversary Celebrations Update
In November 2017, we announced that the Chamber would be celebrating it’s 70th Anniversary and would be commemorating the occasion with events throughout the year. This year we have been celebrating with the number “70” and supporting our members at the same time.
In January, the Chamber supported Safe Harbour by donating over 70 cold weather items such as scarves, hats, and gloves. Safe Harbour is a not for profit organization that provides a continuum of housing services for the homeless of Cumberland County. Their services included operating an emergency shelter for families and single females who are in desperate need of a secure place to live and an environment to begin getting their lives under control. They provide a full spectrum of housing and supportive services designed to create a connection between the emergency shelter and independent living within the community. Safe Harbour continues to change and grow as they provide services to the homeless and potentially homeless of Cumberland County.
On Thursday, March 15th, the Chamber staff went over to the Carlisle location of Classic Drycleaners and Laundromats to volunteer their time and learn more about the newly installed automated assembly and bagging system. The staff was taken on a tour of the Carlisle location and learned about all the upgrades that had taken place to make the facility more time and energy efficient. Each staff member then processed over 70 shirt orders for the next day’s delivery. With Classic Drycleaners and Laundromats serving the Greater Harrisburg area with nine drycleaning locations, five laundromats, free pickup and delivery service, and a textile and electronics restoration division that sure does bring in a ton of items to be cleaned!
Lastly, in April the Chamber staff, with the help of our members, collected over 70 pounds of non-perishable food items for Mission Central. We delivered the items on May 2nd and were able to see how the food items are packaged up for donation along with taking a tour of the impressive facility. Mission Central is the mission warehouse of the Susquehanna Conference of the United Methodist Church. Since their beginning in 2002, Mission Central has had 3 points of focus: Disaster Response, Mission Outreach and Mission Education. They also provide space for multiple different organizations in their warehouse such as Bethesda Mission, Computer Ministry, New Digs Ministry, Inc., Project C.U.R.E. and UMCORE Relief Supply Network. Just last year, the warehouse put out over $7 million dollars’ worth of support to places in need!
Be sure to keep an eye out for what the Chamber will be doing for the rest of the year! The Chamber uses Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Linkedin and will be promoting these events socially using #WSC70th. Follow along as we continue celebrating 70 years!
